Oregon Sunstone is one of the more handsome gemstones that
are mined in this country. Colors range from a delicate peach to
a fiery red-sometimes with green mixed in. What set’s these
Oregon sunstones apart from sunstones found elsewhere are
the copper crystal inclusions that give it its unique color variances.
We purchase many of our sunstones from our friends Judy and Jolene,
who mine their uncle’s claim in the high desert of southern Oregon. Their
little caterpillar tractor pushes the earth into “push piles” and then a backhoe is
used to pick up the earth and transfers it to a hopper where it is taken
by a belt to a double shaker screen to sort the stones. After they have
worked an area it is graded back to restore the desert.
